LIVING LIGHTLY
Lightness is at the core of our being
but is the part most often forgotten.

Carrying yourself or your burdens lightly
is to establish a relationship between
the earth and the sky - to balance
with gravity not to fight it- and to let
the business of living be carried along easily.
Focus becomes clearer and
decison making more effective.

There is no right way to do anything
but there are plenty of wrong ways.
Inadvertently these may become
habitual patterns of thought and
movement which interfere with well being.
They can cause or exacerbate shoulder,
neck, joint and back strain and increase
difficulty with stress.

Addressing them, during a course
of Alexander lessons,
offers the opportunity to improve
voice and breathing and enhance
personal presence.

DISCOVERING HOW TO
LIVE LIGHTLY CAN
CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
FM Alexander changed his.
He developed this Technique
to overcome vocal difficulties
while performing on stage.
He then became so well known
in his native Australia that he
travelled to England in 1904
to teach his Technique to people
from all walks of life including
politicians, muscians, writers,
house wives and nobility!

Joan Bakewell, writes in the
Guardian 6th February 2007:

"The Alexander Technique
isn't a treatment or a series
of excercises. it's more like
a way of learning how your
body works and educating it
to minimise the tensions that
have built up. Just think how
clumsily we bend from our
waists to pick up weighty items,
putting all sorts of joints at risk.
I went along for a couple of
courses of 40 minute sessions.
I learned about balance, support
and coordination .These were
quiet, almost contemplative times,
when I made minor but significant
adjustments to the way I stood,
sat and moved. I liked it:
It felt restful, and right, Then I tried
to integrate what I had learned into
the daily round. I still do it, but it
has become almost automatic.
And I notice that whennever
I forget the lessons the tension
returns and I feel lumpy and wrong."

SHE CHANGED MY LIFE!
" I can highly recommend Kate to anyone who has a physical problem cured by bad posture. I still don't understand how she does it but I'm so glad she can. She changed my life."
Marcus Henderson

Clients also report increased levels
of alertness, effectiveness in
decision making and freedom
from debilitating back ache and
general fatigue. Others also
access a greater calm and
energy while busy and active.
Relieved of unhelpful stress
many discover an increased Joie de vie!

MY LIFE WAS CHANGED FOR THE BETTER
when I had lessons in the Technique.
Although I had no obvious health problems
the quality of my life was greatly enhanced.

I trained as a teacher with Walter Carrington
at the Constructive teaching centre ,
Holland park, graduating in 1988.

I am certificated by the
Society of Teachers of the
Alexander Technique (UK)

I am also a member
of ATE (Alexander teachers education)
who adhere to and promote the
original teaching of FM Alexander.

For 20 years I have assisted in the training
of teachers in: London, Amsterdam, Aalborg
San Francisco, and Barcelona and have
taught a wonderful variety of people.

In the last 10 years I have combined Theatre skills
and the Alexander Technique to give coaching and presentation training for major organisations including Prudential, PWC, and Standard Chartered bank.
I guest for EDC interplay company
www.edcinterplay.co.uk
and am on the staff of two London Theatre schools.

My teaching practice is in Central London
where I give individual Alexander lessons
- the best way to learn the Technique-
at: Nelsons Homeopathic Pharmacy Clinic, Duke street W1.

WHY TITANIA'S HANDBAG?
Well, to swing a bag or walk lightly
with little effort is to connect to that
essential lightness of being
which all of Shakespeare's
fairy world must enjoy!

Although many of us have forgotten how,
it is also our "supreme inheritance"
to move upright with lightness and ease
even in an uncertain world.

TWO CLIENTS' STORIES
" I went to see Kate because I'd been suffering from sciatica for over a year. The pain was so bad that I was prescribed a combination of 2 powerful pain killers which allowed me to continue something like a normal life, albeit without being able to oay sport. In addition there were side effects of occasional nausea and an upset stomach. I'd already tried physiotherapy and 3 different osteopaths but believing that the problem stemmed from poor posture I turned to the Alexander technique. The first lesson lasted about an hour. At the end of the session I had a a sense of well being. I wasn't sure if this was due to my improved physical state or because kate has got a beautifully modulated and calming voice. All the adjustments had been so gentle and so small that it didin't seem she had done anything, whereas after some oateopathic manipulations and massages I'd been close to tears. The next day I took painkillers at breakfast and lunch because it was habitual and I didn't think Kate could have succeeded in one session but late in teh afternoon when I was due another dose of drugs I realised something was different . Normally by that time, the pain would be gnawing through the painkillers but today I felt no pain at all, I decided to delay taking medication until the pain returned as if the pain did return, I could swallow some pills and would only have to endure an hour of agony before they took effect. As the evening and the next day passed I was amazed to find that I had no pain. I was so relieved that I booked up regular sessions for the next 6 months in order to reinforce what had been done .That was ten years ago. Since then I've been back a couple of times when I thought that my posture might be lapsing into bad old ways, but all of the time I am pain free. I lead an active life, playing sport and going to the gym regularly. I can highly reccommend Kate to anyone who has a physical problem caused by bad posture. I still don't know how she does it but I'm so glad she can.
She changed my life."
Marcus Henderson

"I use a computer a lot and in 1998 I began to get pains in my arms. Like many another RSI sufferer before me I ignored the pain and kept going. I stopped only when it had become excruciating and I was unable to do much at all. I could not perform any of those myriad tasks for which you use
your hands and arms - everything from driving to using scissors was quite impossible. I rested, took painkillers, saw physiotherapists, tried all sorts of mice and keyboards. Nothing helped. Then some friends invited me to join a residentialAlexander course. For the first time the pain started to lessen and when I got back I started regular Alexander lessons with Kate. Learning the technique has given me more awareness of how I am using my body. It's easy to get so fascinated by your computer that you don't notice how you are sitting or even that you are experiencing discomfort.
At the first sign of pain I stop, go for a walk, have a cup of tea, lie on the floor of my office for 10 minutes.
It isn't a miracle cure, more of a training in how to look after your body."
Claire Martin
